We like the Peachtree Accounting products for small companies. They are highly affordable and simple to use. But often a Peachtree Accounting package out-of-the-box lacks capabilities you need. Or perhaps the accounting data it maintains simply needs to be shared with another piece of software. Worse, maybe the Peachtree transactions originate in another system. (The last thing you want to have to do is —ouch!— double-enter transactions.) In all of these cases, the product off the shelf needs to be extended.
Here is a simple example. Your company initiates most purchases with a complex purchase order. You are a company that buys and resells products unique to each sale, so the process of buying involves detailed instructions that are different for every purchase. What’s more, due to the nature of the manufacturing process, complicated shipping instructions will also be necessary; there will be multiple shipments to multiple locations. Peachtree is first and foremost an accounting program, and its purchase order feature falls short of your company’s particular needs.
What to do? You don’t want to abandon the Peachtree P.O. because you like the benefits of a P.O. system integrated with your accounting package. After all, you want the P.O. in place against which to record the vendor’s invoice and where appropriate to track inventory arrivals.
We solve this problem by extending what’s available in Peachtree with customized interfaces built in Visual Basic that employ a third-party COM tool from Multiware that provides direct access to the Peachtree Btrieve database. This gives you access to fields not available in Peachtree while still including the “live” data in Peachtree. The interchange of data between the extension interface and the Peachtree interface is virtually invisible to you as you work.
